Eye Candy

These Log Bowls by Loyal Loot are fantastico! These bowls are handmade and using only locally reclaimed trees. They come in a variety of woods and a vast array of colors. I'll take one of each please!

"Samantha" ~ Before & After

Introducing "Samantha," our newest Hollywood Regency beauty! This piece turned out soooo gorgeous! When I spotted her in one of my favorite local antique shops, I knew I had to have her! The paint was faded and a bit dingy, but the detailing was stunning. The craftsmanship was perfect, and I knew with a little "re-loving," she would be gorgeous! After I purchased her and was loading her into the car, imagine my delight when I saw this marking on the bottom:

A LANE piece! Lane has been a producer of fine furniture since 1912, and is probably most famous for their cedar chests. In my family, it is a tradition for all the girls to receive a LANE hope chest on their 16th birthday. I still have mine, and it is my most prized possession. I've read that the serial number reveals the date it was created. It is the month-date-year backwards. So this piece would have been made on January 16th, 1965. The first year that LANE started creating accent pieces. While I was hesitant to repaint such an old and lovely piece, she desperately needed some TLC. It doesn't look that bad in the photos, but in person she was quite shabby and dingy...

 Here's a step-by-step guide to the re-loving process...

Equipped with various grades of sandpaper, I got to work! Be sure to have a good quality dust mask and safety goggles (or big obnoxious sunglasses will do the trick!). I used an orbital sander on the flat surfaces and a smaller triangle shaped sander to get into the detailed areas. I sanded away any imperfections in the wood, and roughed up the surface a bit, so that that the primer would adhere properly.

I applied two coats of primer - KILZ 2 is a water based latex paint, and can be used for interior and exterior jobs. It's by far the best primer I've found.

Onto the paint...I decided to use a bright white flat paint, and a high gloss black paint for the details.

Peanut decided to help with the first coat! Onto the second...

I had originally planned on somewhat replicating the original paint, and painting black on all the areas that were gold. But halfway through (and several hours of work with a tiny art brush), I realized the black was much too strong and overwhelming, and actually detracted from the beautiful woodwork. So I had to go back and do two more coats of white to cover up the black that I had done! Eesh...
My lil' helper was worn out by this point...

Onto the newly refined detailing...

After I was satisfied with the exterior, it was time to move onto the inside!

I used this amazing paint that my paint guy recommended. I am in my local paint store ALL the time, working on "re-loving" projects, and the guys are always great about helping me choose the right type of paints for my pieces. This new paint by Benjamin Moore is a water-based acrylic gloss enamel. It's magical! The finish is so glossy and gorgeous! I wanted the inside of this buffet to be ultra sleek and shiny and almost lucite-like, and this paint gave me exactly that. I'm sure I'll be using it on lots of projects to come! (The paint was rather expensive, but the coverage was great, and the results are worth it!)

After two coats on the interior, I sealed the entire piece with a water-based polyurethane by Benjamin Moore. After the first coat, I lightly sanded with a 220 grit sand paper to make sure the finish was perfect. A second and third coat of the poly, and viola!!! Samantha is fini!

I'm so in love with how it turned out! I'd love to keep her for myself! But my house is already full of pieces I've re-loved, so this baby is now for sale in my Etsy shop! Check her out!

Tranquil Tiles

This bathroom is exquisite. The pale green tiles are soft and calming and contrast beautifully with the black and white room beyond. I love the (hopefully faux!) fur rug as a bath mat...how decadent! And is that a Le Klint pendant fixture? Loves it!

Before and After ~ Basement

As most basements tend to be....ours was dark, dreary, dusty, and cluttered! So we decided to turn this wasted space into a guest room.
Bright white on the walls and floors really brightened up the space, and damask on the two opposing walls gave just the right amount of pattern and texture. Keeping the bedding simple allowed the beauty of the wallpaper to take center stage.
The terrible before:

"Headboard"

I'm totally digging this "headboard"! A modern take on the traditional bedframe. What a great, and inexpensive alternative! And perfect as a DIY project. This would be ideal for a guest room, or any room where space is an issue. Though I'd recommend more pillows to cover the space between the bed and the bottom of the painting, to help enhance the illusion a bit.

Za za Zebar!

As you may begin to notice, I have a bit of a crush on anything black and white. And this flooring is no exception. This Zebra hardwood by Preverco is striking. The red oak, wire scrapped planks are sophisticated and a bit daring. As mentioned in a previous post, I'm about to install wood laminate flooring....oh how I wish I could afford this instead! Maybe the Preverco gods will smile upon me and send me a plank!

Adorable!

How cute are these cup lamps from Rare Device? They would be so adorable over a kitchen sink, or clustered in a breakfast nook! I might have to beckon my pops to help me wire some for myself!

IKEA

Have you been yet??? IKEA finally opened it's first store in Colorado. Some design snobs may look down upon the Swedish retail chain, but for those of us who can't spend $8,000 on a floating bed, IKEA is a fantastic gateway into the design world.

SCRABBLE

Scrabble time! Check out this wordplay installation at the Bloomberg offices in London by the crew at Stephen Reed Industrial Design. Who needs Facebook scrabble when you could have this?!?
Just the lettered pillows alone are so fun! Imagine them in a guest room as an alternative to traditional monogrammed pillows.

Morbid much?!?

Call me crazy, but I'm sort of digging this baby-bits coat rack. Morbid? Maybe. Unexpected? Definitely.
Adding to my list of DIY projects? Absolutely!

Brilliant!

This isn't the first time I've seen this done, abut it's the best execution I've seen! What a smashing idea! I'm getting ready to install wood laminate flooring in a stairwell. Just today I was debating how I would get the laminate to work on the "rise" portion of the stairs. I think I've found my solution! I'll wallpaper them in some fabulous pattern instead!

Tree-tastic!

I love trees. Love love love trees. Have I mentioned I love trees? Especially their skeletons. These glasses are divine. These would be so lovely for a dinner party, or on display on a buffet or bar cart.

Bring the outdoors in.

I'm loving this "wood" table. Made from recycled plastic, this white molded tree trunk could be used as an end table or a footrest. And check out that rug! A sunny splash to brighten any room!

Faux Fabulous!

Animal prints are risky. Too much can turn your room from classy to tacky. But just a touch can be a cheeky wink in an otherwise formal space. Like this Zebra print chair. Image what an unexpected surprise this would be in a stately office or entry way.

Sunshine, sunshine, go away.

I love Damask...who doesn't? But these Wellies are fantastic! Living in Colorado, we don't get enough rain to justify this purchase...Portland, here I come!

True Love

As mentioned in my previous post, I'm working on a black and white design project. In my quest for the perfect wallpaper, I stumbled upon two stunners:

The first is the Cole & Son's Wooded Wallpaper, available at Rose & Radish. This little beauty has been popping up everywhere lately, included the designer's house in Season 2 of Top Design. It's striking and quirky without being too bold or brash. The stippling technique creates an almost antiquated feel, while the stark black on white keeps it fresh and modern.

The second is the Blackbird paper by Cavern. Available in several colors, each divine. Two of my very favorite things, trees and birds...in the same paper...heavenly! It's so crisp and clean and almost abstract from afar. I'm loving that wallpaper is making such a strong comeback in interior design. Either of these papers, used even sparingly on just one wall could transform an average room into a delicious and decadent space.

Lovely Lattice

I'm in the process of desiging a basement. The bedroom and living area will be pure black and white with yellow accents. I'll post before and after pictures when the project is completed. I've purchased most of the items for the rooms, but one this is missing...these pillows!!! The yellow and white lattice is pure perfection and would tie the rooms together brilliantly. Oh how I covet this fabric...

I found the next picture after I began the project, and it is remarkably similar to the style and vibe that I am trying to capture. This room was featured in Architectural Digest, and is stunning. I can only hope to achieve a similar result. And of course...they are using the same lattice fabric!

Cute, yes?

Faux bois, “fake wood” in french, is popping up everywhere...and that's just fine by me! These earrings from Pulpdesigns on Etsy are fab, and would go with everything in my closet!
